On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, we are honoured to announce the organization of the XVI Symposium on Biological Nitrogen Fixation with Non-Legumes, together with the IV Latin-American workshop on PGPR and the XIX RELARE, in Foz do Iguaçu (Iguassu Falls, Brazil) from 26-31th August 2018. The event will cover a wide range of disciplines including evolution, ecology, genomics, biochemistry, physiology, crop production, crop engineering and new applications of growth-promoting microorganisms. The Symposia will be comprised of plenary talks by international experts as well as posters and oral presentations chosen from submitted abstracts. We welcome participants from academia, industry as well as from the public and farming sector and look forward to fruitful discussions on the latest developments in this field.
OBJECTIVE OF THE EVENT
The main goal of this meeting is to bring into discussion the different aspects of the use of microbes and their interaction with crops, in order to meld the basic and advanced research with a focus biological products for the improvement of crop yields.
The Symposium on Biological Nitrogen Fixation with Non-Legumes have been traditionally organized since 1979. In the years 2008 and 2012, the 11th and 13th BNF‐NL‐symposia were successfully organized as satellite meetings of the European Nitrogen Fixation Congresses in Ghent and Munich, respectively. This was also true for the 14th BNF‐NL‐Symposium that was organized by our Chinese colleagues at the Asian Congress of Plant‐Microbe Interaction in Cheng‐Du in October 2014.
The Latin-American Workshop
The Latin-American Workshop on PGPR is a recent series of meetings based on research and application of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR). The 1st meeting was organized in Medellin, Colombia, and was part of the 9th International PGPR conference. In 2014, the 2nd workshop was organized in La Falda, Cordoba, Argentina and the 3rd Workshop was organized in Pucon, Chile. In 2018, Brazil has the honor to welcome you to a meeting to gather together experts with the proposal of bridging BNF-NL and PGPR in the light of new concepts, methods, organisms and field utilization for crop growth.
The meeting of the laboratory network for recommendation, standardization and diffusion of microbial inoculants technology for agricultural interest (RELARE) was created in the early 1980s with representatives from research institutions, inoculant industries and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA). The role of RELARE is historic and decisive for the establishment of legislation on microbial inoculants in the country as well as the protocols contained in normative instructions for inoculants. In addition, RELARE represents the most important forum in Brazil for the discussion of new inoculant products and technologies, guaranteeing the safe and beneficial use of microorganisms in Brazilian agriculture and influencing other countries in South America. The XIX RELARE has the objective of bringing together researchers and producers/importers of microbial inoculants of agricultural interest in Brazil in a forum where the main advances and current problems related to the theme will be discussed.
